Learn How To Find Long Tail Keywords (2020)

I have written a lot about keyword research and its benefits. One of the big mistakes I see many people make is that they will target keywords directly, rather than long-tail keywords (LTKs).

If you’re not familiar with the long-tail keyword, here’s a quick example of the difference between short-tail and long-tail:

  • Long-tail keywords (eg short-tail keywords) – monthly searches 50
  • Long-tail Keywords vs. Short Tail Keywords (eg LTK) – Monthly Searches 12
  • Long Tail Keyword Conversion Rate (Pre LTK) – Monthly Searches 13

You may have noticed that the last two keywords are less searched, but the competition for these two keywords is much less than for the short-tailed keyword.

Plus, long-tail keywords drive more targeted traffic than short-tail keywords, so your conversions (sales, email sign-ups) are greatly improved.

In this post, I am sharing some of the best long-tail keyword finder tools. Note that some of them are free, and some of them are paid. I’ll explain the features of each, and you can choose the one that suits your needs.

Best practices for identifying long-tail keywords:

1. SEMrush:

SEMRush is the most popular way to find tons of long-tail keywords in just minutes of work. What makes this tool different from others is the ability to see:

  • keyword volume
  • keyword difficulty
  • keyword cpc
  • competition score

This kind of data will help you prioritize the keywords that will be easier for you to rank for.

There are a few ways to identify long tail keywords using SEMRush, and let’s find out how.

1. How to Identify Long Tail Keywords:

This is one of the reasons why SEMRush is popular among SEOs because it lets you reverse engineer any webpage or domain to mine all the keywords. Using the SEMRush filter, you can quickly remove all short-tail keywords, and focus on long-tail keywords

To use this feature,

  • Create an account on SEMRush (Use SEMrush coupon to get free access for 14 days)
  • Once logged in, enter your competitor’s website address in the “Domain Overview” section

On the results page, under “Top organic keywords” click “View full report”

Now, on the next page use the filter to remove all the short tail keywords.

Under Advanced Filters, select “Word Count” over 2 or 3 “Contains”. It should look something like this:

As you can see, in a matter of seconds you will be able to create a long list of long term keywords.

Similarly, you can repeat the process by inputting all your competing domains, and you will be able to find a mega list of long tail SEO keywords for your project.

2. How to Find Long Tail Keywords Using Seed Keywords:

This is another popular method among SEOs to generate long tail keywords. This method is simple, and works wonders for generating lots of long keywords.

Here’s how to use this method:

  • Login to SEMrush Dashboard
  • Click on Keyword Magic Tool > Under Keyword Research
  • Enter your seed keyword

On the results page, click “Advanced Filters” and set the word count to 3-15.

Click “Apply Filter” and within minutes, the Keyword Magic Tool will generate hundreds of long tail keywords with volume. (see screenshot below)

Here are some more settings to fix the Keyword Generator suggestion. One of my favorites is using the “Question” filter.

Unlike traditional keyword research, SEMrush takes away the guesswork and helps you quickly find long-tail keywords from any website. If you are looking for a perfect tool for long-tail keyword research, look no further than SEMrush.

You don’t need to believe me but use SEMrush for free for next 14 days.

2. KWFinder:

It is one of the latest entrants in the keyword research tools market. However, with the kind of features and functionality that KWfinder offers, it is definitely one of the best tools out there.

Using this tool, you can search for any keyword and it will show you the frequently asked questions around that “keyword” “topic” in search engines. As a free alternative, this is the best long-tail keyword finder tool.

4. Google Auto Suggestion Tool:

Google Search’s autosuggestion feature is your first free tool. This is a handy feature of Google, which will allow you to easily find long tail keywords in any place. Google auto-populates keywords (search terms) based on popularity.

All you have to do is start typing your first keyword, and select options from the auto-suggestion.

You’ll need to use another keyword tool to see additional details like number of searches, CPC, competition, and other important information. (On my micro-niche site, I usually omit the competition check because it’s easier to get higher rankings with a niche site.)

You can repeat the same process with Amazon. Amazon search is powered by its own engine, and typically, you’ll find keywords that contain the intent to make a purchase.

5. Google Auto-Suggestion:

This Keyword Tool is a tool from Dominator that really takes the default feature of Google’s auto-suggestion to the next level.

You can easily find all the auto-suggested keywords with this free tool, and it will allow you to Download keywords in .csv format,

You can then use any of your favorite keyword research tools to check other important details about the keyword.

If you are using Google Search to find new long-tail keywords, I highly recommend that you make a change on this,
